Rock stars

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

By Karl Giberson Scientists around the world are waiting for a Halloween goodie bag from NASA and unlike Charlie Brown, who would lament that he got a rock these recipients could not possibly be more excited as they anticipate the arrival of their rocks. NASAs rocks are from outer space, collected by the wildly successful Stardust mission, launched seven years ago to gather comet debris. Stardust landed in January in a Utah desert. The capsule visited Comet Wild 2, a relatively recent arrival in the region of our solar system between Mars and Jupiter. In passing near this comet, Stardusts aerogel collectors swept up material being ejected from the comet and brought it back to Earth. It is the most adventurous treasure hunt our species has ever conducted a 2.9 billion-mile odyssey to gather a most impressive treasure. Wild 2 is interesting because until recently it lived in the Kuiper Belt, a vast assemblage of comets orbiting way beyond Pluto, so far from our sun that almost no heat reaches them. In the icy recesses of the Kuiper Belt comets do little more than drift lazily about the sun no long tails stream behind them, carrying away their surface material, erasing the telltale clues to their origins. Astronomers believe that Kuiper Belt comets are perfectly preserved fossils from the early days of our solar system silent, unreachable eyewitnesses to the birth of our cosmic home. Because the Kuiper Belt is so far away, visiting it is out of the question. But Comet Wild 2 got pulled by Jupiters gravity into a much closer orbit, essentially inviting us to meet it halfway, which NASA was only too willing to do. And, because Wild 2 had only been in our neighborhood for a short time, the increased heat from the sun had not had time to melt or otherwise disturb its primordial surface. The rocks embedded in Stardusts aerogel may have a truly interesting story to tell our story of how our solar system came to be. How did our planet get so rich in chemicals, from carbon to uranium, when these are astonishingly rare in our universe, making up a tiny fraction of its matter? Where did the building blocks of life on Earth come from? What kind of star exploded in this part of the Milky Way billions of years ago, creating the disc of interstellar material out of which our solar system formed? Why is there so much life-sustaining water on the Earth? Missions like Stardust generally return little more than information for the billions of dollars it costs to run them. And those billions come from U.S. taxpayers. But surely they are worth every penny if they help us create the rich story of our origins. Scientists believe, for good reasons, that all the varied atoms in our bodies were once inside a star. These atoms were fused from hydrogen that dates from the beginning of the universe. The star exploded, spreading these atoms across a great region of space in a gigantic cloud. Gravity pulled them into larger clumps a central sun, planets, comets, moons, asteroids. And on one of the balls that gravity made a special place called Earth life appeared. If we can spend millions of dollars on government reports trying to piece together the story of what happened at Whitewater, or who knew what before Sept. 11, then surely we can spend a few times that on our own grander story. Use Newsletters to Turn A Prospect Into A Customer

Monday, October 29th, 2007

By Andrea J. Stenberg Marketing professionals often refer to the Rule of Seven. This rule states that on average, a prospect needs to see or hear your marketing message seven times before they take action. Now, the number may vary slightly depending on your industry but the basic truth remains the same it is unlikely a prospect will become a customer the first time they hear your name. Why is this? The prospect may not need your service at this time, they may not be sure of what your service is, they may be worried about the price. But the most likely reason is they are unsure of you. They are asking themselves: are you reliable, knowledgeable, trustworthy? Does your product or service perform as advertised? So how do you reach your prospects seven times and prove yourself without wasting time, money or ticking them off? A great way to achieve this is sending a newsletter. A regular newsletter that is heavy on relevant content and light on sales messages will grab your prospects interest and allow them time to get to know you. Newsletters that offer the latest information in your field or tips that help the readers increase your credibility. If the information provided is useful, the reader will spend more time reading your newsletter than they would a brochure or sales letter. The readers may begin looking forward to your newsletter. At this point you are no longer an anonymous firm selling your product or service you are a familiar name who has provided useful information for free. They know you, like your newsletter and hopefully have come to trust you. An added bonus: according the Chicagos Sales and Marketing Executive Report each newsletter is passed on to an average of three more readers. Whats the down side? A badly written newsletter can do more harm than good. The worst newsletters are nothing more than sales copy reformatted into a newsletter. While it is acceptable even necessary to include a sales pitch in the newsletter, it must not be the main focus of the newsletter. Without useful information as the basis of your newsletter, you will annoy readers, lose subscribers and miss an opportunity to gain their trust. Coming up with good articles for your newsletter is one of the toughest parts of producing a newsletter. The following list should get you started and help identify topics that will grab the readers attention while promoting your company: New research in your field: Readers will appreciate being kept abreast of new developments in your field, plus you will be seen as someone who is knowledgeable and current.Tips: Tips on product selection, installation, maintenance, how to hire a professional, reminders for seasonal repairs and maintenance.How-to articles: Similar to tips but more in depth. Ideally the how-to article should show a reader how to solve a problem your product or service can handle.Case studies: A look at a how your product or service helped solve a problem for one of your customers. Be sure to focus on the problem and the results.Legislation that affects your customers: An accountant could write about changes to tax laws. A contractor could write about building code changes.Community affairs: Does your company sponsor an event, make a donation or participate in the community. Let your readers know.Industry experts: Going to a trade show or conference? Interview the speaker and write up the interview as a Q & A article. Creating a regular newsletter is not for the faint of heart. It can be time consuming and challenging coming up with fresh ideas for each issue. But the payoff in new customers and customer loyalty can make it well worth the effort. Andrea J. Stenberg is a freelance commercial writer. How To Use Business Cards To Network And Market Your Business

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

By Christopher J. Brunner You’ve had one thousand of the finest, most eye-catching business cards printed. Now, what do you do with them? Networking with business cards is one of the most cost effective means of marketing your business–and yourself. Get those business cards out! Don’t leave them sitting in the box, they do you no good there. Get them into the hands of your prospects! If you think of your business card as a mini-billboard for your company, you’ll realize that you need people to see it in order for it to be effective. Here are a few ideas to get you started… 1. Keep them in your pocket, purse, briefcase, and wallet, on your desk, and at the reception area of your office. Leave some in your car. Always have them on hand so you can introduce yourself to new people when the moment is right. They should be a necessary part of your routine before you leaving home every day. When checking for your wallet and keys, check for a stack of business cards too. Keep replenishing your supply. 2. Store your cards in a nice holder so they don’t get bent. Keeping your business cards in a stylish case makes for a better presentation when you give your cards out. Business card cases come in all shapes sizes and materials. Choose one that fits your personality! Likewise, treat others’ cards well when you accept them. For example, spend a few moments reading the card closely before you put it away. You won’t impress the person by mishandling their business card. If your contact information should change, have new cards printed immediately. Writing in your new email address or phone number leaves a bad impression. 3. Place your business cards on bulletin boards at local restaurants, supermarkets, libraries, and your children’s schools. At your place of business, have a bulletin board where others can post their cards in return for passing out your cards to others. If you see a fishbowl offering a drawing for a prize, throw your business card in. Somebody important might see it and contact you. 4. Include business cards with all of your correspondence, including bills you pay. You never know who might open the mail that day. If Realtors can sell houses this way, why can’t you generate business the same way? If you ship products, for example, include a card with every package. Send business cards with all thank you notes and letters you send out. Include your contact information in your email signature as well. It serves as an electronic business card. 5. Use them as scrap paper when you need to jot down a note Instead of a napkin, use the back of your business card to write in your cell phone number. “This is my direct line,” you might say, making the prospect feel important and giving him or her a reason to keep your card. 6. Give people a reason to hold on to your card Include something unique on the back of it–a calendar, a list of your services, important measurements, or anything relevant to your industry. You could also print a coupon on it, and ask them to return the card with their order, so again they have a reason to keep your card. For more ideas of what to include, please see “Power Words for Business Cards”. 7. As a business owner or manager, have business cards printed for all staff members, right down to the lowest ranking person. The novelty of the cards for those who usually don’t have them will entice employees to hand them out. At the same time, you’ll make them feel appreciated. Your employees are part of your network, so use their networks to generate business for your company. 8. Use your business cards to introduce yourself to prospects you meet at networking functions, in the park or at your children’s soccer games. However, don’t be pushy. Make sure the time is appropriate. One way to do this is to ask for the other person’s card. He or she will likely ask you for your card in return. Another idea is to hand out two or three cards at a time–one for the person you meet, and extras for him or her to hand out to referrals. (Offering to do the same would be the polite thing to do here.) When you go to the doctor or dentist, present your card to the receptionist to announce your presence. Leaving your business cards to sit in a box or a drawer collecting dust defeats the purpose of having them. They are inexpensive enough to print by the thousands, so hand them out liberally. It’s a cost-effective way to market yourself and your business. Be creative and you will soon have more business than you can handle! Do your business cards work as hard as you do to gain new clients/customers? To network effectively, you need cards that will grab attention and spur curiousity. With breakthrough online technology, you can design your business cards online and choose from thousands of free business card backgrounds. 2004-2005 GreatFX Business Cards. All right reserved. Some Side Effects of Bee Pollen

Saturday, October 27th, 2007

By Jean Helmet There are a few rather adverse side effects of bee pollen however, they are extremely rare and are not often heard of. Despite these facts, there are a handful of people out there that experience harmful even life threatening side effects of bee pollen. Allergies and Side Effects of Bee Pollen Allergies and side effects of bee pollen can be best expressed in describing some of the common side effects of bee pollen that happen in frequent users. Allergies and bee pollen is another remarkable area that breakthrough research and studies are being conducted all the time. Some side effects of bee pollen can include feeling tightness in the chest, throat, or breathing problems. These are rare side effects but have surfaced in several users. It is highly debated whether these sufferers of side effects of bee pollen were previously allergic to bee pollen however, these effects are not welcome for anyone. Skin hives and a rash can accompany a side effect or spawn an allergy alert also. An upset stomach and throwing up can be another side effect of bee pollen and although is rare too, can be an unwelcome guest in the house of the body. Side Effects of Bee Pollen and Drug Interactions The side effects of bee pollen and drug interactions can be one of a serious nature if taking either over-the-counter medications or prescription. This doesnt mean if you take an aspirin and you are currently on bee pollen therapy that you are going to break out in a rash and go into anaphylactic shock. Women who are pregnant or wishing to become pregnant should refrain from ingesting bee pollen and avoid unwanted side effects of bee pollen to her or the baby. Similarly, a breast-feeding mother should sustain from bee pollen therapy. Dietary supplements can also have a negative effect and can cause side effects of taking bee pollen. Other conditions are high blood pressure or heart vessel disease. Why You Should Consider Buying Organic Food

Friday, October 26th, 2007

By Gray Rollins Besides the fact that organic food tastes better and it reduces the amount of cancer-causing chemicals that enter your body, there are plenty of other very good reasons why you should buy organic food. Here are just a few: Organic Meat Comes From Healthier Animals The animal from which you got your meat is guaranteed to have been healthy throughout its life. Why? Part of the criteria governing organic products is agreeing not to use antibodies to treat an illness. Animals that are raised with the ultimate goal of being organic are raised in more humane conditions (as outlined by the United States Humane Society). These better living conditions result in healthier animals and healthier animals simply are less prone to illness and disease. Of course, nothing can guarantee an animal will never become ill, and occasionally one will require antibiotics to cure an ailment. When this situation happens however, the animal that was treated with the antibiotics must be removed from the organic farm. The affected animal loses its organic status and is usually sold to a conventional farm where it lives out the remainder of its life. Buying Organic Is A Form of Protest When you buy organic food, youre basically making a statement that you care about what youre putting into your body. So much is happening to our food before it enters the supermarket. We hear about it, yet we do nothing to stop it. If you ever took a few moments to think about all that food is exposed to, from start to finish, the details likely would boggle your mind. Sure, all that perfectly-shaped produce and those rather full-sized chicken breasts look enticing, but those perfections are the end result of growth hormones, genetic engineering, and an abundance of pesticides and fertilizers. Youve probably heard the saying, Nature is not perfect countless times, yet time and again you continue to reach for that perfect tomato. When you buy organic, you are in effect saying you dont want to be part of that scene any longer. When enough people buy organic, and more are making the switch every day, food companies will be forced to listen to consumers. Its Something You Can Do to Protect the Environment The chemicals that go onto the fields that produce the fruits and vegetables you eat and that feed the cows and pigs that turn into your hamburgers and pork chops contaminate the soil and the water. This affects the animals that live off the land and it also contaminates the environment. When you choose foods that are produced without these cancer-causing chemicals, you are not adding to this problem. Your purchases likely wont put an end to environmental damage, but as with all things in life, change begins with one person. Get a few friends to change their buying and eating habits, and then have them get a few friends to change and soon enough, a sizeable impact will be in the works. Returns, How To Handle Them, And Save The Sale

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

By Claude Whitacre When someone returns something (that you will refund on)…. The first thing I tell them is that I will refund their money. That sets their mind at ease, so I can find out what the problem is. Starting off by saying We dont give refunds is the beginning of an argument.Ive had people bring back machines the next day simply because the vacuum cleaner bag was way too full, and the vacuum stopped picking up dirt. Had I started off saying We dont give refunds, we never would have found out that the problem is very simple to solve.Solving problems is always more profitable than arguing. Also, try to let the customer leave happy. Every person is either the Hero or Victim of the story. Let them be the Hero. If you argue to prove a point, they leave unhappy. The only way for them to get even with you, is to tell anyone who will listen, that you are evil, and they were your victim. A hundred of those kind of stories about you can sink your business. Ive seen it happen. Ads wont work then, nothing will. Assure the customer that they can get a refund, try to solve the problem, and make the customer happy. That’s what successful companies do. And that’s one of the reasons they became successful. ”Sign-up now for my FREE Retail Marketing course “Unfair Advantage Retail Strategies”.About once a week, I’ll provide you with valuable retail marketing strategies that have been proven and tested,(mostly by me). http://www.claudewhitacre.com Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Claude_Whitacre http://EzineArticles.com/?Returns,-How-To-Handle-Them,-And-Save-The-Sale&id=222504 buy ultram online now buy ultram on line purchase tramadol without a prescription ultram online without prescription

Wedding Invitatation RSVP Cards

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

By Kevin Stith When it comes to response/RSVP cards, the goal is to get a response. Whether selecting a card with a self-addressed, either by hand or computer printed labels, and pre-stamped envelope or an economic post card with your address on one side and the guest response on the other, do what works best for you. You can personalize the response with a handwritten note or print it with standard or customized wording. A helpful hint for keeping the RSVP process on track and organized is to lightly number each card on the back and correspond it with a numbered guest list. It is customary for the response cards to go to the host of the wedding, but the bride can request they remain sealed until the responses can be opened together. The response card can be addressed to you as long as the address of the host appears on the back of the main envelope to indicate they formally sent the wedding invitation. The caterer insists on a final guest count about a week before the wedding, so dont be shy about calling those who havent sent in their RSVP by the set date. Often close friends and family members assume you know theyre coming and they fail to even return the first phone call. Let a parent or your fianc make the second call to communicate how sorry they are the guest will be unable to attend and how they hope to see them at another gathering soon. This usually brings forth a quick response from even the most dedicated procrastinator. Creative wording for your wedding invitations is all about expressing yourself creatively and wedding invitation etiquette is a guide to expressing yourself appropriately. Is Your Networking Not Working

Sunday, October 21st, 2007

By Debbie LaChusa I was at a networking event recently and this young woman came up to me and introduced herself. Using typical networking etiquette, I asked her “So, what do you do?” Well, that turned out to be the wrong question to ask her! She proceeded to tell me all about herself and her business, not once stopping to take a breath or give me, or the other person I had been talking to the chance to say a word. When she finished, she handed me her business card and said, It was nice meeting you,” and walked away. I felt like I had just watched a very bad 60-second commercial for her business. And boy was I NOT interested. The sad thing was, she was a massage therapist, and I was an ideal client for her - I get a massage once a month and have for years. Too bad she didn’t take the time to find that out. Definitely a missed opportunity for at least a more interesting conversation, and potentially a new client. And the kicker was, she asked for my business card, but I NEVER heard from her after the event! So what just happened? I’ll tell you. She spent her valuable time and money to attend this event. And, she did everything she thought she was supposed to do. She went around meeting lots of people. She told those people all about herself and her business. She handed out lots of business cards. She collected lots of business cards. And then she went home, and expected her business to grow as a result. Wrong! If you network this way, you may as well save your time and money. Because you’re probably not going to see results. I believe you must approach networking the same way you approach any other form of marketing … You must use the Sharp-Shooter Approach Select networking events that are a good match for you and your business. Events with attendees who are either your ideal clients, people likely to refer your ideal clients, or like-minded business people you could partner with. Go with the intention of making a few strong connections. It’s about quality, not quantity. And always, always, always, follow-up! And, not just an “it was nice to meet you” email. Ask yourself how you can help the people you’ve met. Can you refer a client to them? Can you suggest a win-win partnership? Ask yourself what step you can take to start to build a relationship with each person you meet. Here are four questions to help you evaluate YOUR Networking behavior: 1) Are the events you attend filled with your ideal clients, potential partners, or like-minded solo-preneurs? (HINT: don’t waste time at events that aren’t a good match for your business. Targeting is important.) 2) Are you focusing on meeting a few key people at each event, or are you counting the number of business cards you can pocket? (HINT: Quality over quantity wins in the networking game.) 3) When you meet people at networking events, do you spend the whole time talking about yourself and your business, or do you spend time getting to know those you meet? (HINT: Be a good listener. It’s more interesting and people will love you for it.) 4) Are you following up with those you meet after the event, offering value to them, or suggesting ways you might be able to work together? (HINT: Consistent, meaningful follow up is the key.) Evaluate your networking strategy so you can be sure your networking activities are a valuable part of your marketing plan andnot a waste of your time, money and energy.
