All About Freelance Writing

Monday, December 31st, 2007

By Nell Taliercio Do you love to write? Do you have a knack for making words come alive on a page? You may want to consider freelance writing as a way to make a good living from home. Freelance writers write anything from newspaper columns to web content and even ebooks. Getting Started Before you go looking for freelance jobs, you should build up a portfolio of articles. You can write for your own website or blog, offer to write free articles for friends, or contact your local paper about writing a column for them. Work on some articles that you can use as samples of your work and build a list of references for your potential clients to contact. Where To Find Work The next step will be finding potential clients. You can visit some of the big freelance sites like elance and bid on projects. It is also a good idea to set up a website that showcases some of your writing, tells a little about you and your area of expertise, and of course you will have your contact information on the site. You may also want to consider adding a blog to your site. Its an easy way to add articles, short tips and any other writings to your site on an ongoing basis. Networking is another great way to find work. Think about friends, former colleagues, bosses and clients that would be interested in having some writing done and call them up. As you start building your own client base, ask for referrals. Do you know someone that successfully freelances now? Ask them for advice on getting started and spend some time with them. They may refer clients to you that they dont have time for. Do the same for other freelancers if you are contacted with a project you cant handle. Many magazines will accept freelance work. Keep a spreadsheet with names and addresses of the editors of the various publications and pitch story ideas on a regular basis. It can be tough to get a foot in the door with magazines, but once you start getting published it will become easier and in many cases more lucrative. Getting Paid How much you will get paid will largely depend on the size of the project and how involved it is. Short articles on general topics that dont require research may pay as little as $5.00 a piece while doing research for and writing an ebook may bring you several hundred dollars. If you love writing about a variety of topics, I encourage you to give freelance writing a try. Its a great way to do what you love and stay home with the kids at the same time. The main key to becoming a successful freelance writer is to practice writing all the time, whether you get paid for it or not. Just get out a pen and paper, or open you favorite text editor and start writing. Pest Control - Invasive Species

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

By Stephanie McIntyre As if homeowners, farmers and gardeners don’t have enough to deal with from native born pest species. There are a host of invasive pests that have chosen to make their homes in countries where natural controls don’t exist. These bad bugs can truly devastate entire native populations of plants, trees, animals and other insects, and leave destruction in their wake. In a world where every place is readily accessible by every other place, controlling the transference of alien insects is becoming increasingly difficult. And one of these species can be well established before anyone is aware of their presence, or how they got there. They represent a real challenge for all of us in the future. Here is a list of some of them along with their descriptions. Asian tiger mosquito - gets it name from the black and white stripes that cover its body and legs. This mosquito was originally found in Houston, TX, in 1985 in a shipment of used tires. It has subsequently invaded many other southern states and has made it’s way as far north as New Jersey. It tends to be more aggressive than most native mosquitoes, and it feeds during the day rather than night. Like other types, the female is the one who bites humans, and these particular mosquitoes are more successful than most at it. Because it bites so quickly, it is able to elude most attempts to swat it. Also, they will lay their eggs near any open container of water but unlike other species, not directly in water. They are becoming an increasingly problematic pest for humans who live within their range. Asian longhorned beetle - has become one of the most serious threats to American hardwood trees. They have been known to most often attack chestnuts, maples, elms, willows and poplars, and can kill even healthy trees. They are woodborers, feeding on both the sapwood and the heartwood of the trees that they attack. The Asian longhorned beetle is about an inch long, black with white markings, and has 2 very long antennae on its head. The antennae are longer than the bug’s body. These large, bullet-shaped insects also have elongated feet and the top surface is a bluish color. They have no natural enemies in the U.S., and therefore have the potential to cause billions of dollars in damage to the nation’s hardwood lumber industry, and other related industries. Female beetles chew through a tree’s bark and lay their eggs underneath. When the immature beetles hatch, they will chew farther into the tree to feed on living tissue. This interrupts the trees food supply, which ultimately starves it to death. Upon reaching maturity, the adults chew their way back out to start the cycle again. Currently the only control for these beetles is to cut down and destroy all infested trees. Mexican bean beetles - are one of the few destructive members of the lady beetle family. Both adults and immature beetles are injurious to the plants they feed on. The eggs of this beetle are oval shaped and yellow, while the larva are spiny, bright yellow and about 1/3 inch long. The adults are inches long, yellow to copper colored, with 16 black spots on the wings. The larvae and adults feed on the undersides of leaves of soybeans, snap beans, limas, kidney beans and a host of other garden plants. They chew leaves between the spines leaving a skeletonized, lace-like structure behind. These leaves eventually shrivel up, turn brown and die. Adults will also feed on seedlings as they emerge in the early part of the growing season. Since infestations are heaviest in the latter parts of summer, some control is possible by planting crops early. Also, when possible, handpicking can significantly reduce their numbers. These are just a few of the invasive pests inadvertently introduced into the U.S. There are many others that threaten our habitat, wildlife and industries. Vigilance on the part of all of us is key if we are to keep these invaders from destroying that which we hold valuable. Stephanie McIntyre and Wendell Bryant are Internet developers. Heavy Metals Harmful To Your Health - Can Cause Major Health Problems - How To Detox

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

By Fred Fishburne It has been found recently that soils tainted with heavy metals from industrial pollution and sewage sludge may poison organisms that live in the soil far more than thought. The finding raises fears that unexpectedly high levels of toxins are getting into the food chain, says Environmental Science and Technology. Heavy metals are thought to bind tightly to soils, which would make them readily available to the plants growing in those soils. This suggests that heavy metals could be more bioavailable to the food chain. There are those that do not agree with this study. To date, there are over 65,000 toxic chemicals being dumped into our environment. Toxins are everywhere in the world in which we live, even found in unborn children, according to a 2004 study done by the Environmental Working Group. Many of these toxins are known to cause cancer. Many more are toxic to the brain and nervous system. Cadmium, a toxic metal can cause kidney damage. Urine samples from hundreds of children show a link between autism and exposure to heavy metals. Samples from children with autism contained abnormally high levels of a family of proteins called porphyrins, which are precursors in the production of heme, the oxygen-carrying component in hemoglobin. Heavy metals block heme production, causing porphyrins to accumulate in urine. Detoxification of heavy metals as a treatment of autism and other major health concerns is showing promise. Drug companies are at work now producing drugs that rid the body of heavy metals. All drugs have side effects. There is good news however. Liquid zeolite is a natural and very thorough way of removing heavy metals from the body. Zeolite is a mineral with a negative charge. Heavy metals have positive charges. Basic science tells us that opposite charges attract. Zeolite has a honeycomb structure, which attracts and traps positively charged heavy metals into it structure and removes them completely from the body. How simple is that! All done by nature. Final thought. Man will fail again to out do nature as he attempts to heal with drugs. Fred Fishburne and his wife are owners of a successful health store in McDonough, Ga., since 1994, specializing in combining supplementation and proper nutrition for optimal health benefits. Antique Books - Worth the Reading

Saturday, December 29th, 2007

By Bill Kernodle An antique book is more than a collection of pages by your favorite author. It is a piece of history, a glimpse into the past. One in which the binding was done by hand the paper often likewise and if far back enough in time, the pen was a quill. There are many factors which influence the value of an antique book, as in all antiques. First there is the condition of the book. The binding, the pages, whether dog-eared or torn, or God forbid, missing. The pages may have notes written on them. (Which can often be valuable in themselves if penned by a famous person or under unusual circumstances) or they may be damaged or stained or any number of factors which will affect their desirability. In the same way if a book is signed by its author this usually increases its price, although in the modern world not necessarily as “book signings” are all too common as a marketing tool and have helped to downplay the importance of a signed edition. All of these factors contribute to the overall value of your antique book. The overall availability is a factor in price but is not necessarily the main factor as a book may be hard to find but not desirable. In other words it may be rare but nobody wants it! Confusing? Yes it can be. It is prudent to consult a dealer to appraise your antique book whether for insurance purposes or because you are attempting to sell it. In the final analysis, antiques are always only worth as much as someone is willing to pay for it. Appraisals Dealers usually need to see the book itself in order to identify and appraise it. You may submit photographs if you cannot see the dealer in person due to distance or time. They will require usually a photograph of the title page, the back side of the title page (also called the copyright page), the first and last pages of text, and the outer covers and spine in order to evaluate an individual copy. It is best to have very close up, quality photographs if you must go this route. If you are not proficient with a digital camera, ask one of your friends to do it for you. The popularity of digital cameras today makes quality photos easy to accomplish. Do not try and photocopy the book! This produces very poor results and may in fact damage the book due to the pressure exerted upon the spine in this process. You often hear the phrase “first edition” in reference to books and this can influence the price of the book if there were, in fact more than one edition! Many times there were not. Be careful when someone touts the first edition status of an antique book and attempt to determine for yourself if there were indeed subsequent editions. Again remember to use all of the resources online and elsewhere to obtain valuable and often free information on your antique book. There are several national societies of book dealers, “antiquarians” and of course appraisers that you may take advantage of in the search for information. There are also book collecting societies that you may investigate. Take your time and learn all you can before you buy or sell your antique book. Antiques. How To Make A Candy Bouquet In A Coffee Cup

Friday, December 28th, 2007

By Peta Fletcher Oh No! Its your Aunt Sally’s 60th birthday, and she’s coming over to see everyone. Normally you would think this is good news, but no-one told you, and you don’t have a gift for her! Don’t Panic! There’s a simple gift you can make her that she will absolutely love… It’s a candy bouquet in a coffee cup, and you can make one using a coffee cup, some leaves, and some flower shaped candies! Step 1: Find a suitable coffee cup… Most people have lots of coffee cups in their house. Maybe you have a cup from an old coffee set that got broken? Try and find a nice looking cup, as it will ruin the effect of the candy bouquet if you use an old tacky, chipped cup! Step 2: Prepare the coffee cup to hold the candy… Take some dried oasis and push it into the coffee cup. If you don’t have an oasis, you can stuff the cup with cellophane, but an oasis will work much better, as it will hold the flowers up much more firmly. Before placing the oasis into the cup, place a square of cellophane in at the bottom. This will make it easier to clean later, as any flakes that fall off the oasis will be caught by the cellophane. Step 3: Add the leaves for the candy bouquet… Place some leaves around the outside edge of the cup. Make sure that the leaves overlap slightly as this will give a nice fanned effect. Try and space the leaves out evenly, but don’t worry too much if the aren’t spaced perfectly… it will make the bouquet seem more natural. Step 4: Insert the candy flowers… The next step is to place the candy flowers into the cup. Start in the middle and work your way out until all the candy flowers have been used. Depending on the size cup, and candy you are using, this could be anywhere between 5 to 11 candies. Step 5: Fill the gaps with leaves… When you give the candy bouquet to Aunt Sally, you don’t want her to see the oasis inside the cup, as this will ruin the effect. So fill in any gaps where you can see through to the oasis, with leaves. Step 6: Add some ribbon… Personally, I like candy bouquets that have some ribbon. Place some ribbon around the cup, and maybe even add a figure-of-eight-bow to soften the bouquet a little. That’s it, all done! Very quick and easy, I think you’ll agree! This Candy Bouquet looks great, and will make an ideal present for anyone, especially Aunt Sally! Just don’t be surprised if it’s half eaten next time you see it! Peta Fletcher has been making bouquets for over 14 years. Get Clean on the Inside First for a Safe Weight Loss

Thursday, December 27th, 2007

By Foras Aje I was driving past the gym the other day and I was actually impressed at how full the building was with people diligently getting their workout for the day in. Perhaps its because it is summer time here in Los Angeles and everyone wants to look good for this time of the year. Well, as motivating as this may be, and as much as I honestly applaud their efforts, I couldnt help but wonder how many of these obviously dedicated people were concerned with not just the external appearance of health but the inside as well. It is documented that people spend loads of money on the new weight-loss pill or supplement guaranteed to ‘make you eat less and increase your metabolism…’ and in spite of whatever side effects the product may contain, the average Joe, still thinks this quick fix will be worth the risk. What most people fail to realize is most fitness experts and bodybuilders who may use or endorse such products have a tendency to atrophy and wear down prematurely as sooner or later, these bodies, enhanced by unnatural substances have a tendency to pretty much degenerate. Sure everyone wants to have the six-pack and the toned arms and all, and that is fine and of course worth striving for if one so desires, however, what should be of more importance is how clean the inside of the body is. This determines perhaps more than is realized just how one feels and speaking of a six-pack, if ones colon and visceral organs are free of excess weight and debris, naturally a decent looking mid-section will be evident. (Just food for thought) The average person is constantly carrying 10-15 pounds of un-eliminated feces in their bowels. This in itself has a toxic effect on the blood stream. Experts in autopsy have stated that in 60-70% of the colons examined, foreign matter such as worms and decades old feces-stones have been found still present within. Now, its not my intention to gross you out with the fact in the previous paragraph, but it is to hopefully make you realize how much more important it is to ensure that our insides are clean as we go about seeking to lose weight, at least the healthy way. Now, it is important to know that healing properties, not the calories, as most diet fads state, is the main factor for choosing a diet for a safe and effective weight loss. Therefore, fruits, some roots and mostly raw green leaf vegetables, which serve as nutrient giving items and intestinal brooms, should form the basis of a healthy diet when seeking to lose weight. These substances will serve to naturally combat chronic constipation which is the main indication of a clogged up system. Moreover, these are the items that provide one with the most natural sources of vitamins, minerals and fuel for day to living and borrowing from a cosmic law of nature, since you are what you eat, it goes without saying that if you want a safe and healthy weight loss, these items are of course your best bet. Sure, it is a great feeling to be able to see the awesome cuts in your ‘abs’ and arms when you look in the mirror, but feeling good on the inside as well and knowing that you are thoroughly cleansed internally should be of just as much importance as ‘getting ripped’ or slim. Remember, the cleaner you are on the inside and the freer you are of toxicity the quicker you can and will attain your goal of being in shape. Heres to health and happiness. The Meanings Behind the Colors of Roses

Monday, December 24th, 2007

By Colins Smith Roses are a sign of love and friendship and by giving someone a rose you are telling them how truly special they are. There are a number of colors of roses available and each one represents a different meaning to the receiver. If you are looking to purchase roses for that special someone, but arent quite sure which color would best suit your relationship, keep reading to find out what each color represents. Red Red roses are a sign of love, beauty, courage and respect. This color represents romantic, sincere and passionate love. If you want to show your loved one that they are the love of your life, red roses are the ones to choose. Giving a single red rose to someone is a simple way to say I love you. White White roses are a sign of purity, innocence, silence and youthfulness. They are given to individuals who are shy about love and are used to tell the person how special they are. White roses can also be used in weddings as an indication of new love which is just beginning. Pink Pink roses are a sign of appreciation and are often given as a thank you. Pink flowers also represent happiness and admiration and are given to someone you love whether it be a significant other or a best friend. Yellow Yellow roses are a sign of friendship, happiness, joy and promise. Yellow roses are often given to show happiness for loved ones who are returning from a long trip or leave of absence. Orange Orange roses signify desire and enthusiasm. They can be given at a graduation or a commencement to celebrate the ending and beginning of two different phases in life. Lavender/Purple Lavender or purple roses are a sign of love at first sight. If you just meet someone and have fallen head over heals for them, show them how you feel by giving them lavender roses. Regardless of the color of roses, they represent love and friendship among many other wonderful things. Roses can be planted in your garden or kept in vases throughout your home. If you are growing roses in your garden follow this gardening tip to ensure you receive the best results possible: Pruning Your Roses Using pruning shears, trim your roses around the edges and remove any dead leaves from the plant. Cut out any dead wood, twigs or stems which are cross-growing over one another. Pruning should be done twice a year (once in the spring and once in the fall) to ensure your roses are kept in top condition. Where you decide to plant your roses and the kind you choose will affect the overall appearance of your garden. Roses are quite possibly the most popular flower to show love and happiness and anyone who receives a rose for any reason should consider themselves a very lucky person. Los Angeles Malpractice Attorneys

Monday, December 24th, 2007

By Kent Pinkerton Given the fact that Los Angeles is home to a large number of cosmetic surgeons and clinics that offer cosmetic surgery, the chances of people gaining access to some of the best cosmetic surgeons in Los Angeles are raised. This is because given the Hollywood profile of Los Angeles, being a successful cosmetic surgeon in Los Angeles can be one of the best ways to gain prestige in the field. However, this does not mean that all cosmetic surgeons in the city are good, as there are also cosmetic surgeons that are based in Los Angeles, which may not have enough credentials to perform cosmetic surgery. As a result, there cases in which people are “injured” by the surgery due to any deformities or other health problems caused by the surgery as a direct result of the surgeon’s negligence or incompetence. Getting a malpractice lawyer For people who suffered injuries as a result of cosmetic surgery, it is very important for them to get a good malpractice lawyer given that establishing a surgeon’s culpability, especially in elective cosmetic procedures can be a complicated process. The good news is that getting a good lawyer can be a fairly simple process, as long as the necessary steps are taken that can help a person assess the capabilities of a lawyer. Among these steps, one of the most important is to ask a lawyer some very important questions, which includes asking him about his experience about these kinds of cases. As a rule of thumb, the more experienced a lawyer is with malpractice cases, the better. Another important question to ask is whether he belongs to a law firm or if he is a solo practitioner, as this can determine the type of service that people can get from the lawyer. Another very important question is how much their case is worth with regards to the compensation they could potentially receive if they win the case. It would be a good idea to get a lawyer who is more prudent in his estimates, because lawyers who promise their clients very large amounts may only have the retainer fee in mind. For people are injured during cosmetic surgery procedures, it is very important to get a good malpractice lawyer. The good news is that doing so can be an easy process. This is because the people who take the necessary steps that can help them assess a lawyer’s capabilities, which includes asking lawyers questions about their practice, often get the best lawyers who can help them get the justice and compensation they deserve. Help with Fly Fishing Basics

Saturday, December 22nd, 2007

By Ryan Simpson If you are considering taking up fly fishing as a hobby then two of the reasons probably include enjoying the beauty of nature and breathing in the beautiful fresh air. Fly fishing is one of the sports where you can truly enjoy the nature around you and experience the calming effect of the water. There is no speed involved with things flying by you too fast to notice, there is no rush to go anywhere, and there are no guarantees that you will catch any fish. These attributes of fly fishing make it an ideal weekend or vacation sports if your purpose is to be outside in nature and fully relax far away from the hustle and bustle of normal day to day life. The fly fishing rod is lighter and shorter than the average rod used for other types of fishing. These rods are on average around 9 feet long with a weight of about 5 ounces. However, the length of the rod will depend on the size of the stream that you want to fish in. Smaller streams will require that you purchase and use a shorter rod. The fly fishing line is usually heavier than the usual line used for other types of fishing. These lines are manufactured to either float on the surface of the water or to sink into the water. The fly lure that you choose will depend on the type of fishing that you want to do and the species of fish that you want to catch. Some fish seek their food from amongst objects that float on the water surface and to catch these fish your lure needs to mimic floating insects. Other fish get their food from objects in the water and to catch those you lure needs to mimic those objects. The experience fly fisherman always carries a wide selection of fishing lure because what worked yesterday might not necessarily work today. With fly fishing, the time of the day, the temperature of the water, the glare of the sun on the surface of the water, the speed of the water in the stream, and other factors determine what type of lure will work. Fly fishing is such an established sport that the fishing lures have been divided into official categories. These are the dry flies and emergers, the nymphs, the streamers, the wet flies, the saltwater flies, the bass and panfish flies, and these salmon and steelhead flies. Enjoying fly fishing requires a little bit of preparation and knowledge acquisition and thereafter it is learning from experience whilst enjoying the beauty and serenity of nature.
