Carb Blocker, A Solution To Weight Loss?

By Kristy Haugen Low carb diets restrict the consumption of carbohydrates. The difference between the Atkins and the South Beach diet is within the amount of restriction. The induction phase of the Atkins diet restricts most carbohydrates while the South Beach diet allows good carbohydrate consumption. These diets can really put ones will power to the test. Why? The human bodys primary source of energy is glucose. Glucose is derived from the breakdown or hydrolysis of carbohydrates that are consumed. Limiting carbohydrate consumption forces the body to use fat or protein as an energy source. Decreased carbohydrate consumption may leave you feeling tired and easily fatigued until the body adjusts to the change. The word carbohydrate arose because molecular formulas of these compounds can be expressed as hydrates of carbons which yield a basic carbohydrate empiric formula of (CH2O)n. Carbohydrates consist mainly of the combination of two chemistry functional groups: the carbonyl and the hydroxyl group. Carbohydrates exist in different forms such as monosaccharides, oligosaccharides, and polysaccharides. Monosaccharides are usually called simple sugars. These simple sugars cannot be broken down or hydrolyzed into a simpler form (glucose). A complex carbohydrate refers to one or more linked simple sugars that require digestion for absorption. Oligosaccharides contain at least two monosaccharide units. Oligosaccharides may be referred to as disaccharides or trisaccharides depending on how many units of monosaccharides the compound contains. Maltose and sucrose (table sugar) are considered disaccharides. Polysaccharides contain many monosaccharide units. In order for the body to use polysaccharides, these compounds must be broken down into a simpler monosaccharide form. Examples of polysaccharides are starch and cellulose (fiber). Dietary carbohydrate digestion occurs mainly in the mouth and small intestine. During mastication (chewing) the salivary glands secrete the enzyme alpha-amylase which is referred to as ptyalin. Alpha-amylase briefly acts on dietary carbohydrates in the mouth to hydrolyze starch into simple sugars such as glucose. In fact, if you chew on a carbohydrate long enough you may taste sugar. This is a result of salivary amylase hydrolyzing the carbohydrate into a simpler sugar. Mastication increases the surface area of the food for alpha-amylase to act upon. This allows the enzyme alpha-amylase to work more efficiently in carbohydrate digestion. However, the food does not remain in the mouth for a long time so only a small portion of starch is hydrolyzed there. Once the chewed food has been swallowed into the stomach, carbohydrate digestion halts temporarily. This occurs because alpha-amylase is inactivated by the high acidic environment of the stomach. However, carbohydrate digestion will resume once the chyme (food mass and gastric juices of the stomach) enters the small intestine. The acidic contents emptied into the small intestine are neutralized by bicarbonate secreted by the pancreas. The pancreas will then secrete alpha-amylase to continue carbohydrate digestion. Carbohydrate digestion is finished when the mucosal lining of the upper jejunum and duodenum absorb the bulk of the dietary sugars in the form of monosaccharides. Now that we have a good understanding of what a carbohydrate is and the importance of the carbohydrate in the body, maybe an extreme low carb diet isnt the answer for weight loss. Extreme diets whether they are low carb or high protein can put the body to the test. Carbohydrates may be a necessary evil, but the body relies heavily on carbohydrates for energy. Instead of testing ones will power, using a weight loss supplement called a carb blocker may be a better option. Carb blockers are a weight loss supplement recently introduced into the weight loss world. Carb blockers claim to block the enzyme alpha-amylase. If the enzyme alpha-amylase is blocked, then carbohydrate hydrolysis is affected. By blocking the enzyme, you block the breakdown of the carbohydrate which affects absorption of the monosaccharide. How so? If the carbohydrate is of complex origin, the enzyme must be secreted to break down the carbohydrate into a simpler form for absorption. In theory, the carb blocker should indeed help to block carbohydrates from being absorbed. Phaseolus vulgaris is the active ingredient in carb blockers that comes from the white kidney bean. Phaseolus vulgaris interferes with the pancreas ability to secrete the enzyme alpha-amylase. Subsequent studies do prove that Phaseolus vulgaris does in fact inhibit the enzyme alpha-amylase. Carb blockers are another option for weight loss. However, permanent weight loss requires you to make changes to your lifestyle. If you do not change your lifestyle then no matter what diet or supplement you choose, weight loss is temporary and short lived. This also means that if you choose a low carb diet, make sure that this diet can be done. Many people fail the low carb diets because of extreme commitments. Freelance Work: The Changing Face of Employment

Let’s just go back to our grandparent’s generation, even though I’m sure if we went back further we would see very different structures of work in the tribal periods of our history. Our grandparents usually found a skill, and then used that one skill to work for their whole career. An example is my grandfather who was a salesman for the same suit company for 44 years. There is nothing wrong with this. His job was secure; he knew there would be a superannuating fund when he retired, and that there would always be food on the table for his family. These days in the 21st century things have changed, and they are still changing rapidly as we speak. Nowadays it isn’t strange for a person to have around five completely different career paths in their lifetime. You might think that job security is much lower, but there are new types of jobs emerging everyday with the advent of modern technology. Older people can go back to schools and be educated in totally new areas that are greatly desired in society. One of the greatest changes in recent times is the fact that a lot of people are now working for themselves as freelancers from home. Society is still getting all the necessary work done, but the structures in which individuals pursue their dreams and goals in their areas of interest have changed completely. If you are working at home for your own business, you sure don’t have the old hierarchy of bosses watching over your every move, judging your worth, and threatening you with dismissal. People are now self-motivated as they know that if they don’t get out there and share their skills and attributes with society, they simply might be forgotten. There is a new way of acquiring work these days that is so very different than the days of perusing the job-ads in the newspaper or going door-to-door asking for work. Surprise, surprise, its on the Internet! There are now on-line marketplaces for both employers to offer work and for potential freelance employees to show their portfolios. There are many, but an excellent example of one of these sites is www.guru.com. On Guru.com once you have registered your portfolio for free, you can then bid for jobs that prospective employers have advertised. On the other hand, if you are an employer, you can go to the category of work you need done (E.g.: Creative Writing) and search through a list of professionals that you can then contact to do the job. These professionals exhibit the amount that they charge per hour, how much they have already earned through the site and a portfolio of examples of their work. They are then given a rating that has been compiled by the employers who have used their services. It is quite unbelievable; they’ve got people and job types from a multitude of different areas, just about any type of freelance work you can imagine: E.g. Website design, marketing, writing, graphic design, legal, engineering, photography, finance-the list is quite extensive. So you see, “the times they are a-changin’” my friends. Imagine if you were frozen in time one hundred years ago and then thawed out today. All the basic human beliefs and emotions would be the same, but how would the world look to you? Secured Loans Versus Unsecured Borrowing

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=David_Woody]David Woody Loan advertising has really peaked in the last few years, it is almost impossible to read a newspaper or magazine without seeing a plethora of loan advertisements promising us that we can “clear all our existing credit now” or get “loans up to 25,000 regardless of credit history” or “loans up to 100,000 for ANY purpose”, but what about the small print? If you check out many of these ads you will normally find a small disclaimer (usually buried at the bottom of the page) with the words “your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on a mortgage or other debt secured on it”. This is a good indicator that despite the sales pitch in the main advertisement, this company is looking to sell you a secured loan, so what is a secured loan exactly? A secured loan, as the name suggests, is a loan secured against an asset, 99.9999% of the time this will be the home you currently live in. When your home is used as security for any borrowing a solicitor will be involved somewhere along the way to apply a legal charge on the property. This is applied to the property deeds and is a matter of public record ( this is to stop individuals having multiple charges on a single property, generally speaking only 2 charges are allowed legally, the first charge i.e. your mortgage and a second charge i.e. a secured loan). This charge gives the lender additional security over and above the contracted “promise to pay” in the signed loan agreement, this additional security can allow the lender to offer loans to customers with current or historic financial problems such as IVA, bankruptcy, CCJ’s or decrees. Basically as long as there is sufficient equity in the property a lender can be pretty sure they will be repaid one way or another ( i.e if you do not keep up repayments on the loan they will recover the costs by selling your property!) The advantages of a secured loan therefore are that loans can be offered even to customers with adverse credit rates can be cheaper due to increased security for lender loan amounts can be up to 100,000 if secured on propertyBut what about disadvantages? you can lose your home if you fall behind with repayments! can take some time to organise due to legal involvement - up to 6 weeks will usually involve additional costs such as survey, legal fees etc though these are generally added to loan. So, why not arrange an unsecured loan instead? Unsecured loans are much riskier for the lender ( no security) and therefore the credit history and financial circustances of the borrower become much more important, basically unless you have very good credit unsecured borrowing is not an option. However for those with no credit problems, unsecured borrowing can be a very cheap source of funds with rates around 6% APR and up to 25,000 available per loan agreement. The other main advantage is the speed of payout, i.e. the time it takes from completing loan application to actually recieving the funds in your bank account, for an unsecured loan this can be completed in a few days rather than weeks in the case of secured borrowing. So, in summary, if you are looking to borrow 25,000 or less and have good credit, then apply for an unsecured loan at the best rate you can find online. if however, you are looking to borrow over 25,000 and/or have credit problems, then a secured loan or remortgage is the only viable option. How to Get Out from Under All that Clutter

By G. Gaynor McTigue Clutter is one of the most irritating words in the English language. It’s synonymous with stress, because just looking at it can give you agita. The physical clutter soon becomes mental clutter. The problem is getting rid of it. It’s a huge job, so you keep putting it off. But the more you put it off the more clutter you accumulate, making it an even more humongous task to face. Here are some tips, excerpted from my new book “400 Ways to Stop Stress Now…and Forever!,” that will help you break the cycle. Throw something out every day. You’ve got too much stuff in your house. Office. Garage. Attic. Useless clutter that’s weighing you down, getting in the way, obscuring the things you really need. Be realistic. If you’re not going to use it, lose it. Every day, find one thing you don’t need and toss it. Or give it away. Or sell it at a consignment shop. In time, the clutter will begin to vanish and space and order will magically appear in your home…and your life. Stick with this. It really works. Take ten minutes a day to neaten up. Here’s another effective do-it-by-degrees strategy. Supplement your regularly scheduled cleaning by spending a short time each day neatening your home. Use those few minutes to clear a cluttered surface, tidy a child’s room, clean out a drawer, dust a long forgotten place, put something away…or whatever obvious need is staring you in the face. You’ll be amazed at how much this small attention to neatness can accomplish over time. And how organized and productive you’ll become. And when you do get around to more intense cleaning, the job will be that much easier. You’re probably awake at least 16 hours each day. Take just ten minutes of that time to tidy up. Store things out of the way. Take an extra moment or two to put things back where they belong. Why? Because you can bet that wherever you put them temporarily, they will soon be annoyingly in the way. So you end up moving the item two or three times, when you only had to do it once! More than that, things left out tend to reproduce (I swear they do) and multiply to the point where work surfaces and living space soon disappear. Nip those stragglers in the bud and haul them out of sight. Don’t buy what you already have. This may sound obvious, but there are probably several duplicated items in your home right now…and you dont even know it. Or you do know it, because it was easier to find it in the supermarket than fish it out of your cluttered house. So before you go shopping, check to see that you dont already have what you think you need (the rear of the refrigerator, cabinets and closets are good places to start). Make a list of infrequently used possessions and where they’re kept. Over time you can save a lot of money, and spare yourself a lot of clutter, just by keeping track of what you’ve already got. Clean out your closet. Why start each day on a sour note by having to confront an overstuffed, messy closet? How can you possibly figure out what to wear if all your clothes are crammed in and piled up like that? Free yourself of this stifling encumbrance. Go to your local home center and get closet organizers, racks and shelves that’ll help you make the most of your space. Give away what you no longer need. Enjoy the convenience of having everything sorted and easy to locate. Wake up each day feeling relaxed, organized and in control. Extraordinary Tailgating Recipes, Adding Spice to the Game

It’s more than just drinks at the back of an SUV or a truck; tailgating parties are a big hit at any sports event. This is where everyone gets together to celebrate the game, or maybe just for a get together where all of you can have fun, share stories and laughter. But aside from that, no party is complete without food and drinks. Food is a very important part of tailgating. Make sure your food is in the Safe Zone. If you do not, end run will mean something completely different! The most important thing to stress about tailgating is keeping the food at safe temperatures. That is below 40 degrees or above 140 degrees. This means ice and a food thermometer are two of your most important aspects of tailgating equipment. Did you know that between the temperatures 40 degrees and 140 degrees, bacteria grow at the fastest rate? Therefore, the great thing to do is to make sure that you keep cooked meat to their proper temperature and you have kept cold foods under 40 degrees. High protein foods, such as meat, eggs and milk products must be stored less than 40 degrees. Melons should be washed on the outside, cut up at home, and then stored under 40 degrees until serving. And, the food should never sit out more than two hours if you are taking takeout or fully cooked food to an outdoor event. In addition, make sure to keep insects especially flies to stay away from your foods. Try to estimate how much food youll eat at the event. Taking home leftovers is not encouraged by experienced tailgaters. In the end, be prepared and plan. You might want to consider some of these suggested recipes. They are just simply great and delicious, a perennial favourite of many experienced tailgaters. For your main dish, grilled shrimp is easy to prepare. Peel shrimp leaving tail section intact. Pour one small bottle of Italian dressing in an 8 1/2 x 11-inch pan. Place shrimp in pan. Sprinkle a splash of teriyaki sauce on each shrimp. Lightly sprinkle garlic salt across the entire pan. For extra zest, splash lemon on shrimp. Chill in refrigerator for two - three hours to marinade, then grill for 10 minutes. Turn occasionally for browning effect. Do not overcook, as shrimp will get tough. For you beverages, you could prepare summer time punch. Mix 2 cups of water, cup powdered iced tea mix, 3 cups orange juice, 1 cup unsweetened pineapple juice, -cup grenadine, 1 ginger ale and the raspberry sherbet and add a champagne or white wine for extra taste. This will be great drink for your party. Finally, for your desert, try the apple peach pie. This is just easy: combine a cup of sugar, tsp of salt and 2 tbsp of flour. Then add 1 tsp of lemon juice, 1 tsp. cinnamon and the sliced apples. Add the top crust add seal around edges. Cut slits in top. Bake it at 425 degrees for 40 minutes and let it cool for 15 minutes. Before the time has come for the party to start and your friends to arrive, you are already done preparing the foods and drinks. All you have to do is sit back relax and enjoy.
